Mango Street Dreaming is devoted to preserving and celebrating Latin American cultures in the United States and opening up pathways for all immigrant students to access higher education if they desire. It all sums up to remembering our roots, living in the present, and dreaming big. â€‹Mango Street Dream offers community-based scholarships for creative projects that celebrate Latin American cultures and education-based scholarships for immigrant students in their last year of high school, trade school, or in a two or four-year college or university.

This page owes its name to Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street. This book follows Esperanza and her experiences growing up as a young girl on Mango Street. She dreams of moving away as an escape, but she later realizes how her time on Mango Street will always remain a part of who she is.

Growing up as a Cuban immigrant in Louisville, Kentucky, The House on Mango Street brought out a sense of nostalgia as I thought back to my own childhood. I was fortunate to have others invest and believe in me.

Now, it's time to invest and believe in others.

We accepted written documents as a truth of the past knowing that so many experiences were left out of the main storyline of our time on this planet. As we try to grasp the world that our ancestors lived through, we are faced with many blank spaces in what can only be reflected in our face, mannerisms, and those random comparisons we get every now and then that we are the exact replica of a distant relative. When we choose to remember and record our roots, we write the stories ourselves instead of others writing it for us.

Ask the questions that don’t get asked. Record family recipes. Create a family tree. Join genealogy facebook groups. Write down your family’s immigration story. Learn about your home country’s environment and your current home’s environment. Learn your home country’s history - from all sides. Be angry, be upset, be joyful, be grateful. Notice the patterns. Break unhealthy behaviors. Study vocabulary. Dance. Make art using traditional skills. Listen. Record. Repeat. Know that you are not alone. Know that you are a mosaic of all the people and experiences that came before you.

There are many stories around the topic of living in the present in a world designed to overwhelm your senses with urgency and opportunity. Our attention is a valued commodity as we navigate the world, but is your attention focused on what really matters to you? When we choose to live in the present, we direct our attention ourselves instead of others directing our attention for us. Living in the present means finding the stillness in you where all the truths that make up you can coexist. Drowning out the deadlines and the headlines to create a space of inner peace. This is a practice that looks different for everyone.

Slow down. Savor your food. Take deep breaths. Distinguish between fact and opinion. Create an environment of safety in you. Remember that you can relax and have fun. Release control. Dedicate time to relax and genuinely sit still. Meditate. Take note of what makes you feel overwhelmed. Focus on what is in front of you. Keep trying.

How do you want to leave things better than you found it? The answer to this question is limitless.

Create. Serve others. Find the needs in your community and offer solutions. Use the skills, experiences, and resources you already have. Think local. Help others do the same. Share the knowledge. Listen to your curiosity. Think back to what you were drawn towards as a child. Invest in yourself. Invest in others. Grow sustainably.
